Today, we will continue to shout for joy in the Lord, and to praise His wonderful name while journeying through Psalm 33. As we make our way to verses 6-9, we praise the Lord for His second greatest act: that of creation (we will get to His greatest act at the end of the psalm).

Please read Psalm 33:6-9 now.

I have often heard God described as a great artist. This is easy to imagine as you watch a beautiful sunset, or marvel at a starry night, or study the intricacies of the human nervous system. When I would paint messages on a sketch-board, I would often imagine God painting the heavens into existence. I could picture Him moving His giant paint brush across the canvas of nothingness, and creating all that we see before us. But this isn’t an accurate picture of creation.

As finite human beings, the only method that we have of creation is by creating something from something else. We can take raw materials and fashion them into a piece of clothing, or art, or a building. But we cannot create from nothing. The scientific laws of conservation of matter and conservation of energy prevent us from creating something out of nothing. But that’s exactly what God did during the six days of creation.

Before there was such a thing as space and time, God created space and time—not by painting them into existence, but by speaking. “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.”

God didn’t mold trees into existence with His hands; He spoke and they were created.

God didn’t snap His fingers to start the sun with a spark; He spoke and the sun was created.

God didn’t push the ground out of the oceans through thousands of volcanic eruptions; He spoke, and dry ground was formed.

God didn’t hurl millions of stars onto the canvas of outer-space; He spoke and they were there.

God didn’t plant a seed of life in the ocean and use natural processes over millions of years to evolve it into animal life; He spoke and animals were created.

We glorify God when we praise Him for His marvelous creation. But we magnify His power all the more when we praise Him for creating the entire universe without lifting a finger! All He had to do was speak, and the entire universe was created!

Of course, we are honored that, on the sixth day of creation, God took a little more time and focus to make the pinnacle of His creation. Now, God actually got His hands dirty and molded man out of the mud. This is the only time we see God physically creating through the use of more than His word. Yet, even in the case of man, God still breathed the breath of life into His creation. Apart from the breath of God, nothing in all of creation was made.

The psalmist considers this thought in context of the greatest part of creation that he knows: "the sea." This was the generic term for any massive body of water, the depths of which explorers had only begun to explore during David's time. The sea was vast and unknown. But God “gathers the waters of the sea as a heap” and “puts the deeps in storehouses.” Even today, with all of our technology and scientific advances, we still don’t know exactly what lies at the bottom of the ocean floor. Some scientists consider the depths of the oceans to be a more fruitful frontier of exploration than outer space! And yet, God created all of it with a word.

Shout for joy in the Lord, our Mighty Creator! “Let all the earth fear the Lord” and “stand in awe of him.” Our God is great and worthy to be praised! His power is displayed in His creation, which was made with merely the breath of His mouth! Our God has infinite power of creation!
