Psalm 19:12-14 My Rock and My Redeemer

David has spent the better part of this Psalm worshipping the two great books of God: nature and Scripture. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. These two great truths lead us to meditate on God’s awesome wonder.

But, as often happens when we meditate on the glory of God, our thoughts eventually turn to ourselves. When compared with the holiness and purity of God, we realize how utterly sinful we are. David concludes this Psalm with that conviction, but also with the reminder that God is so great that He is even able to Redeem us from our unrighteousness!

Please read Psalm 19:12-14 now.

In verses 12-13, David lists three different types of sin: “errors,” “hidden faults,” and “presumptuous sins.” All of these are part of his “great transgression,” but each one denotes a different category of sin.

"Errors" is the general term that we would use for our sin. This term refers to those “mistakes” that we made. We knew what was expected of us, and we tried, but we fell short. We shot at the target, but we missed the mark. Usually, when we confess our sins, it is this type that we are thinking of. But there are other kinds of sin as well.

David exclaims “who can discern his errors,” which would rightly be punctuated with an exclamation mark rather than a question mark: "It is impossible! My sins are too great to number!" But, as he thinks of his errors, he is made aware that there are other sins in his life that he previously didn’t even know about. These are his “hidden faults”—those secret sins that he didn’t even realize he committed.

You can sin and not know it, or at least I certainly can. Have you ever offended someone without knowing what you said to draw their offense? The same is true of God. None of us know His Word well enough to know every way that we can break His Law; all of us have broken His Law at times without being aware of it. So David begins naming his sin in confession, but also asks God to forgive him of those sins that he doesn’t name; those “hidden faults.”

Then he proceeds to ask God’s aid in keeping him from “presumptuous sins.” These are the worst of all! These are not errors; these are not mistakes; these are not accidents. These are the kinds of sins where we decide beforehand that we know it is wrong but we are going to do it anyway. These are the premeditated sins, which we inherently know should draw a harsher punishment. Most of all, we must ask God to “keep back your servant” from these horrible sins.

And what’s the good news? God can and God will keep us from sin.

Not only has God given us His Holy Spirit to dwell inside of us and guard us from the power of the evil one. Not only has God given us power to resist every temptation, and a guidebook instructing us on how to do what is right. But God has also sent His Son to die in our place as “my rock and my redeemer.” Jesus has redeemed me from the evil of my sin!

I may commit errors of which I am sorry. I may commit hidden faults of which I am ignorant. I may even willfully commit presumptuous sins, which I later regret. But Jesus Christ is my Redeemer. He has forgiven me of all my sin. Now, not only do the heavens declare the glory of God, but I too will join in their song and praise My Rock and My Redeemer.

I am a sinner who has been washed in the Blood of Jesus. My name is written in the book of life and I will live with him forever. I thank God for his grace, mercy and forgiveness. I thank him for his word that helps me to get back on track. I thank him for fellow Christians who help me along my way. I thank him for my Godly parents, grandparents and family who instilled in me his steadfast love. I am thankful that I have religious freedoms to be able to read and study his word without persecution. I am thankful that God has saved me and I have a personal relationship with him- no matter what my sin: “he walks with me and he talks with me and he tells me I am his own. And the joys we share as we tarry there- none other has ever known”.
