Psalm 33:10-12 Praise the Lord for His Wisdom!

Psalm 33 was written in a Middle-Eastern country several centuries ago. The psalmist had no idea that land even existed on the other side of the ocean, much less that there would one day be a country called The United States of America. But that is the country in which I currently live, so I am writing this post on Psalm 33:10-12 from the perspective of an American citizen.

Please read Psalm 33:10-12 now.

All the wisdom of the world is “nothing” to God. All the plans of the peoples are frustrated by God. The greatest empires in the history of the world, like Rome, Egypt, and Persia, have all crumbled. But the Word of the Lord stands firm. “The counsel of the Lord stands forever.”

The government of the United States of America used to know this. We have a long history of relying heavily on the wisdom of God. Presidents were once well-known for praising the wisdom of God in their decisions, and the United States government used to acknowledge that God was Sovereign. For instance:

George Washington, the 1st President of the United States, said “it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.”

James Madison, the 4th President of the United States and primary author of the United States Constitution, said “The future and success of America is not in this Constitution, but in the laws of God upon which this Constitution is founded.”

Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the United States, said of the Bible: “That Book, sir, is the Rock on which our Republic rests.”

Franklin Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, perhaps summed up the history of our nation best when he said, “we cannot read the history of our rise and development as a nation without reckoning with the place the Bible has occupied in shaping the advances of the Republic. Where we have been the truest and most consistent in obeying its precepts, we have attained the greatest measure of contentment and prosperity.”

But, Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States, lamented, “If we ever forget that we are one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under.”

Unfortunately, our politicians have recently preferred to rely upon secular humanism and their own moralistic philosophies, while neglecting the wisdom of God. While Democrats and Republicans debate about the best course of action, God’s Word goes unread. This is a tragedy.

As an American, I can only pray for my fellow citizens. Our nation is currently experiencing a pandemic, riots, mistrust of the government, and hateful talk on all forms of media and social media. Could this at all be related to the fact that we, as a nation, are: murdering millions of babies each year; encouraging homosexuality, pedophilia, sexual promiscuity and adultery while degrading the biblical concept of marriage; borrowing more money than we could ever afford to pay back; broadcasting idolatry, sexuality, violence and blasphemy across every media platform; electing politicians for the handouts they promise (which is bribery) instead of for what is right; and a host of other sins?

If America as a whole has chosen to forget the Lord, then we will suffer the wrath of the Lord. But if the Christians in America will repent of their sin and turn back to the Lord, if we will humble ourselves and pray, and reach out to our neighbors with the Gospel so that the Kingdom of God may be multiplied in our country, then maybe we could elect officials who will honor God. Maybe our congress would make laws in accordance with God’s Law. Maybe our judges would uphold justice and not be swayed by unrighteous philosophies. Maybe our presidents would even turn back to God. Wouldn’t that be a blessing?!?!

After all, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” I firmly believe that the United States of America used to be blessed by God because we honored Him and followed His will. I hope to one day be able to see that again.

But, whether we ever see the Lord's blessing on the United States of America again or not, the fact remains that the Lord’s wisdom is great. While nations, including our own, rise and fall, the counsel of the Lord stands forever. Time after time, God has been proven right while the wisdom of men has failed. Let those of us who trust in the Lord praise Him for His great wisdom. No matter what my citizenry on earth, I am a citizen of heaven! Shout for joy in the Lord, for His Wisdom!
