Psalm 26:1-2 Vindicate Me, O Lord

As I write this blog post, yet another political leader has come under investigation for immoral conduct. Many of his colleagues, even those in his own party have called for his immediate resignation, while others, including the President of the United States, have urged that we wait for the investigation to yield its results.

However, many of us have grown tired of political investigations. We get the feeling that the truth never seems to actually come out. After reading the results of a previous investigation, I found one political party hailing it as presenting the truth, while the other party declared that the investigation was full of lies!

Who is to be trusted? Who can actually find the truth? To whom should we submit for investigation when false claims are lodged against us?

That is where Psalm 26 comes in. Apparently, David has been falsely accused of some evil action, so he wants someone to investigate his steps and find him innocent. But he is not willing to settle for any potentially biased human investigation; he wants the truth. So he brings his case before the Lord.

Please read Psalm 26:1-2.

The first words that David writes in this Psalm are “vindicate me, O Lord.” Charles Spurgeon believes that this “is a solemn appeal to the just tribunal of the heart-searching God.” David is crying out to God for justice! He knows that he is innocent, and only a thorough examination from the Lord of the Universe can prove it.

Often, we feel like we have been falsely accused. When in an argument with our spouse, our friend, our neighbor, our brother or sister in Christ, or anyone else, it can sometimes feel like they are “stretching the truth” or exaggerating the facts, or they are simply wrong. We want to go to the Lord to plead our case before Him. We want to use words like David used: “examine me,” “prove me,” “try my mind and my heart.” We want the most thorough examination possible to prove our innocence.

But be warned: if you want a thorough examination of your thoughts and actions, you may not be pleased with the results! None of us are completely innocent; all of us have the guilt of sin on our hands. That is, unless your hands have been washed in the blood of Jesus Christ!

Through Jesus, we are made clean. Because Jesus has paid the price for our sins, we can now withstand the most thorough scrutiny and be declared righteous.

We are not righteous because we “have walked in my integrity” or “have walked in Your truth.” We are crooked sinners who have walked in the way of the ungodly. And it wasn’t some mistake – we meant to sin and wanted to sin. It felt good in the moment and we did it on purpose. We are sinners!

Yet, at some point we realized the error of our ways. We then repented of our sin and trusted in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. Now, if I am tested, tried, or examined, any such scrutiny will prove me clean. I am righteous, not because of my acts, but because “I have also trusted in the Lord.” God has declared me righteous, so no one can say otherwise. The results of the investigation are in: I was guilty, but I am now innocent through the blood of Jesus Christ.

My husband and I were just talking of this topic the other day. In today's society- the truth is very difficult to determine. Sadly, people can be falsely accused and the accuser is praised with no solid proof- only accusations. Society goes along with the accuser and can ruin a person in the eyes of man. Only God knows the truth in these situations and only God will be able to Judge each according to their actions. It is so sad how everyone has to tip-toe around everything that they say as to not to offend. Even if what they say is not offensive, it can be manipulated into being perceived as offensive. Right is wrong, wrong is right. Immoral is moral and moral is immoral. I am thankful everyday that God continues to lead me in his truth and his ways. Although, I am saved-I am still a sinner but I am washed in the blood of the lamb. When I truly ask God to examine me-I am not worthy. Not worthy of his love, not worthy of his grace but he graciously forgives me and showers me with them anyway.
I thank God for my salvation. I thank God that I am secure in my heavenly home. I will end with another hymn.."This world is not my home. I'm just passing through...The Angels beckon me from Heaven's open door. And I can't feel at home in this world anymore. I have a lovin' mother just hovering up in Gloryland. And I don't expect to stop until I shake her hand. The Angels beckon me from Heaven's open door and I can't feel at home in this world anymore."
